Jill. A Novel
London: Faber and Faber,, 1964. Octavo. Original red-brown cloth, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Some very minor rubbing to extremities, spotting to top edge of text block, paper flaw to edge of page 145. An excellent copy in the lightly rubbed jacket with faded spine panel and a little toning of the lower panel. Second edition, with the author's corrections. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To John – my scourge & defender: affectionately, Philip". The recipient, John Saville (1916–2009), was a a friend and colleague of Larkin at the University of Hull and one of the most influential labour historians of the 20th-century. Presentation copies of Jill, in either the first or second edition, are uncommon. This is the only one we have handled, and the last copy at auction appeared in 1989.
