De La Loi du Contraste Simultané des Couleurs, et De L'Assortemente des Objets Colorés - Atlas
Paris: Pitois-Levrault et Cie., 1839. 40 lithographed plates, 36 in colour, some fold-out, 9 coloured paper samples. Several plates signed by Chevreul. The very scarce Atlas of figures, which relate to the text of Chevreul's pioneering work, like his discoveries concerning the chemical properties of animal fats and his invention of the stearitic candle, arose out of his responsibilities as chemist in charge of producing dyes for the Gobelin tapestry works. Although completed in manuscript by April 1835, publication was delayed because the cost of producing the coloured plates deterred prospective publishers. This book, with its English and German translations, became the most widely used colour manual of the 19th century. This delicate volume is all complete, but the covers and spine are soiled, and detached, a number of the plates have splits along the fold lines, and some have spotting. 4 copies only, noted on OCLC. Size - 285mm. x 245mm.. [13765/504]. Signed by Author. First Edition. Board Covers. Good. 285mm. x 245mm.. Book.
