Three Rare Glass Stereoview Photographs of Early Travels of Francis Frith in Egypt and Nubia.
Egypt, 1856-1859, 1856. Three (3) glass stereoview photographs of Francis Frith's important work in Egypt, each with the embedded signature of the artist, each numbered and labeled to side margin with Frith's title and caption. Also with small labels of London's Stationers' Hall. Stereoviews measure approximately 3.25 inches x 6.75 inches (8,5cm x 17cm). In very good and original condition, sharp images, exceedingly rare. Francis Frith's photographs of Egypt are some of the earliest and most sought-after views of the Near East. This lot includes the folllowing: "The Approach to Philae, from the North.", "Grottos and Cut Rocks in the Sandstone Quarries at Hagar Silsili.", "View of the Tombs of the Memlook Kings at Cairo.", Francis Frith (1822-1898) was an English photographer, and founder of the photographic studio in Liverpool, Frith & Hayward. best known today for his work in Egypt. He journeyed to the Middle East on three occasions, the first of which was a trip to Egypt in 1856 with very large cameras (16" x 20"). From September 1856 to July 1857 he travelled through Egypt, Palestine and Syria, where he made full-plate and stereo negatives. The work produced on this journey catapulted his remarkably prolific career as publisher of travel images. Upon his return, in 1860, he produced 100 stereoviews of his travels in Egypt, Nubia, and Ethiopia.
