17 Antique Prints-THEUERDANK-EMPEROR MAXIMILIAN-BURGUNDY-Burgkmair-Negker-1550
1550 - 17 Antique prints, titled: '[Group of 20 woodcuts from a ca. 1550 Theuerdank edition].' - 20 woodcuts on 17 sheets. These woodcuts are all illustrations to Theuerdank, a poetic work composed by Emperor Maximilian I. Drawing on Arthurian romances, Theuerdank tells the fictionalised story in verse, of Maximilian (as Theuerdank) travelling to the Duchy of Burgundy to marry Mary of Burgundy (Erenreich), and the subsequent eight years of his life as ruler of the Duchy. The images show court scenes, landscapes, knights and adventures. An illustration from 'Theuerdank' (original title: "Die geverlicheiten vnd einsteils der geschichten des loblichen streytparen vnd hochber├╝mbten helds vnd ritters herr Tewrdannckhs"). This work was published nine times between the first edition (1517) and 1693. We believe this page to be from a ca. 1550 edition. The (in total) 118 woodblocks for this sumptuous edition were mostly prepared by Jost de Negker after designs by Schaufelein, Burgkmair and Leonhard Beck. Woodcut on hand laid paper. Made by 'Jost de Negker' after 'Hans Burgkmair'. Jost de Negker (c. 1485-1544) was a woodblock cutter for woodcuts and print publisher. He was mostly active in Augsburg, Germany. He was the leading (reproductive) block cutter of his time, but always worked after designs of others. Hans Burgkmair the Elder (1473–1531) was a German painter and woodcut printmaker. He was a student of Martin Schongauer. Most of the woodcuts attributed to Burgkmair are book illustrations, as here. Fair, given age. Sold with all faults. The sheets quite damaged, with tears and paper loss. All but two of the images complete, the two with minimal paper loss in a corner. The margins quite soiled and stained, some of the image edges soiled as well. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully. The overall size is ca. 18 x 28.3 cm. The image size is ca. 18 x 28.3 cm. The overall size is ca. 7.1 x 11.1 inch. The image size is ca. 7.1 x 11.1 inch. Storage location: C334-45/46
