Cockalorum, A Sequel to Chanticleer and Pertelote, Being a Bibliography of The Golden Cockerel Press, June 1943-December 1948
London: The Golden Cockerel Press, 1949. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Number 6 of 250 copies, octavo size, 112 pp., signed by Christopher Sandford. The third bibliography from the Golden Cockerel Press, in the limited deluxe first edition. With engravings reproduced from numerous artists from this period of the press, including Eric Gill, Blair Hughes-Stanton, David Jones and many others. "For several years, paper rationing and war economy regulations had made it impossible for the Golden Cockerel to converse with its patrons in print, or provide examples of its new typography and the latest work of its artists for the benefit of lovers and students of art and book production. So a special effort was made in "Cockalorum" to fill the gap. A more extensive commentary than ever before accompanies the bibliography, the books being considered from three aspects of literature, illustration, and book-production. The second half of the book comprises a reprinting of several lectures, critical articles, and a broadcast discussing the work of Dorothea Braby, John Buckland Wright, Clifford Webb, Eric Ravilious, and Sandford's own attitudes to printing and the press." From the library of Geoffrey Ashall Glaister (1917-1985), librarian of the British Council, author of "Glossary of the Book," "Encyclopedia of the Book," et al, and lifetime member of the Bibliographical Society and the Printing History Society.
