Of the Consolation of Philosophy
London: printed by J.D. for Awnsham and John Churchill; and Francis Hildyard bookseller in York,, 1695. In five books. Made English and illustrated with notes, by the Right Honourable Richard Lord Viscount Preston. Octavo (185 x 114 mm). Contemporary panelled calf, later label to spine lettered in gilt, panels roll-tooled in blind with blind cornerpieces, red speckled edges. Engraved portrait frontispiece. Bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst with his pencilled notes on the pastedown and front free endpaper, contemporary ownership signature to title page, ink note on first page of preface. Spine and covers lightly rubbed and marked, front joint just starting to crack but still firm, hinge of frontispiece split. Overall a very good copy. First edition of this translation, which includes "The Life of Boetius" and "The Testimonies of several writers concerning Boethius translated" in the preliminaries. The translator, Richard Graham, first Viscount Preston (1648–1695), clearly identified closely with Boethius, having himself been sentenced to death for his Jacobite activities. He saved himself from the scaffold in 1691 (and earned himself opprobrium) by testifying against his accomplices. The translation was his occupation during his last years in retirement at Nunnington Hall in Yorkshire. The preface contains a number of references to his situation, including the complaint that his judges had been more lenient than his friends, who despised him for giving way under trials that they had never undergone.
