London: Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1823 - 2 volumes, octavo (205 x 131 mm). Contemporary red half morocco, raised bands to spines, title and decorations in gilt to spines, marbled sides with double rules, marbled endpapers. Bookplate of Louisa, Countess of Craven (1785–1850) to front pastedowns. Spines consistently sunned, abrasions to sides. A very good pair. Engraved frontispiece in v.1. First edition. Elizabeth Benger (c. 1775–1827) was a poet, writer, and biographer. She struggled to forge a literary career, trying various genres, including poetry, before later finding success with historical biographies of royal women, paving the way for others such as the Strickland sisters and Mary Anne Everett Green. In addition to this work she composed biographies of Elizabeth Hamilton, John Tobin, Elizabeth of Bohemia, and Anne Boleyn. [Attributes: First Edition]
