John Ramsay McCulloch (1789-1864) was arguably the first professional economist and had an early association with David Ricardo and his circle and, after Ricardo's death, gave influential memorial lectures in London, which helped to establish his reputation. He was the first Professor of Political Economy at the University of London, 1828-37, but his main career was that of Comptroller of the Stationery Office from 1838. He continued to publish on economics, including three statistical reference books and a bibliography of the literature. His most popular title, The Principles of Political Economy, first published in 1825, was expanded for this second edition (of five issued), which is scarce and COPAC records only two UK library copies, in the Bishopsgate Library and St Andrews.
