Winfrey (Director and Librarian at Texas State Library), James M. Day (Director of Archives at Texas State Library), Howard P. Wright (only living child of the author), and editor Col. Harold B. Simpson, and numbered 8 of 50 copies on limitation page at front. Also with inscription by former Senator Ralph W. Yarborough to his son Richard on flyleaf. Octavo (9.25" x 6.25"); xx, 246p. Light blue leather boards with gilt decoration to front, spine, and along inside boards. Maroon moire endpapers with red speckled page edges. Plain white paper dustjacket. Very faint bump to bottom front corner, else boards are sturdy, clean, and square. Binding is sound and pages unmarked. Plain paper dustjacket is well toned with a few small, clean tears, with "Special Edition #8" written neatly at top front. Not an ex-library copy. Lengthy inscription from former Texas Senator Ralph W. Yarborough to his son Richard, wherein he references Richard's great-grandfather Harvey, a commander of the Smith County Light Infantry who is mentioned in the text and whose portrait appears on Plate 43. Senator Yarborough was one of the last New Deal Democrats, serving from 1957-1971, and was riding with Lyndon Johnson in the Dallas motorcade two cars behind President Kennedy when he was assassinated. His son Richard would go on to serve both in the Indian Claims Commission (ICC) and then as chairman of the Foreign Claims Settlement Commission.This volume is described by Nevins as "the most useful of the Wright state compendiums.
