Zhizn' i neobychainye prikliucheniia soldata Ivana Chonkina. Litso Neprikosnovennoe. Kniga pervaia. [The Life and Extraordinary Adventures of Private Ivan Chonkin]. Signed and inscribed
Ann Arbor: Ardis Publishers, 1985. Octavo (20.5 × 14 cm). Original printed wrappers; 60 pp. A very good copy, signed and inscribed by the author in 1988, in Russian, "in memory of our meeting in Amsterdam." Second edition of the most important part of Voinovich's satirical triliogy, a picaresque novel written between 1963 and 1969, which attempts to fuse characteristics of the Russian "Ivan the Fool" and Jaroslav Hasek's literary figure of the brave soldier Svejk. Given the work's anti-Soviet implications, Voinovich chose to have it appear in the Paris YMCA publishing house in 1975, which led to his expulsion from the Union of Soviet Writers. In 1980 Voinovich emigrated and lived in Munich until 1990, after which he returned to Moscow, where he continues to live.
