London; [1819]: Edward Orme. Quarto. . Second edition, later issue with plates watermarked 1825. xii, 455 pages, illustrated with 40 hand colored aquatint plates by Samuel Howett (1756-1823). Since the rich first hand literary descriptions by Thomas Williamson accompany this volume it makes this one of most important early 19th Century works on hunting in India. The most beautiful book on Indian sport in existence" (Schwerdt), with some of the earliest aquatints of the wild elephant. Abbey 427. The 1807 first edition was issued in large paper editions as is noted in the Paul Mellon Collection which is extremely rare and is in the Yale Center for British Arts. After some small editions in 1807 and 1808, Edward Orme, printer-seller to his majesty issued this fine edition later licensed to other printers. Within the list of plates, number 31 "Hunting Jackalls" was not corrected but page 357 had been corrected. Note: the long subtitle continues: "the deer, the buffalo, the wolf, the wild hog, the jackall, species of feather game, fishes and serpents. The whole interspersed with a variety of original and curious anecdotes taken from the manuscripts and designs of Captain Thomas Williamson, who served upwards of twenty years in Bengal. The drawings by Samuel Howitt made uniform in size and engraved by the first artists and that picturesque country, together with the manners and customs of both native and European inhabitants. Bound in full maroon straight grained morocco elaborately trimmed in a gilt grapevine motif, finely rebacked with original gilt spine laid down, all edges gilt, endpapers renewed, creasing to leaves from title page to list of plates [7] leaves, some off-setting from plates otherwise clean without foxing, light wear to corners. A very nice copy.
