Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy.
London: Printed for W. Strahan; and T. Cadell;, 1777. Translated into English and illustrated with a commentary, by Robert Thorp. Volume the first. Quarto (266 x 217 mm). Contemporary speckled half calf, red morocco label to spine, alternating Greek-key roll and floral scrollwork tooled in gilt to spine with circular floral motifs between, marbled paper boards, blue sprinkled edges. 22 engraved folding plates. Pencilled gift inscription to front free endpaper, "For R[everen]d Tylden Esq. W. Bland [presents?] compts"; the Tylden and Bland families were connected through various marriages and were both settled in the parish of Hartlip, Kent during the 18th and 19th centuries. Spine ends and extremities professionally repaired, some discolouration through paper boards from leather, half-title backed, remnants of paper pasted to front free endpaper verso, a few nicks to fore edge of plate V, occasional spotting to contents (particularly to plate X), overall a bright copy. First Thorp edition, complete in one volume, considered "one of the best texts to use for anyone who wishes to make a careful study of Newton's Principia" by Cohen, and "extremely rare" by Gjertsen (p. 481; p. 577). In 1776 the Northumberland clergyman Robert Thorp (1737–1812) announced a two-volume translation of the Principia, but only the first volume ever appeared. It constitutes the first revision of Motte, accompanied by an extensive commentary, and Cohen argues it to be "notably improved and amended" (Gjertsen, p. 577) from Motte's edition of 1729.
