El Duende de México
Mexico 1756 - "First CLANDESTINE Periodical From Mexico ÂÂ- Produced Only in MANUSCRIPT Form ÂÂ- a COMPLETE Copy ÂÂ- NO COPIES in OCLC". 4to. Modern mottled boards. 44 leaves. Italic script. EXTREMELY RARE SURVIVAL OF THE FIRST CLANDESTINE PERIODICAL OF LATIN AMERICA, AND THE FIRST OF MEXICO, PRODUCED ONLY IN MANUSCRIPT FORM. This satirical paper was produced only in manuscript form. The Duende was conceived as a journal in prose and verse divided in 4 issues (correos), the first dated 27th of November 1755, and the last 20th of January of 1756. It was dedicated to the arrival in Mexico in 1755 of the new Viceroy don Agustín de Ahumada y Villalón, Marqués de las Amarillas. It followed the model of the Papeles del Duende político de Palacio o del Duende de Patiño, the first clandestine paper produced in Spain in 1735-1736 which criticized Philip VÂÂ's first minister José Patiño. The aim of the Duende de Mexico was to undermine the reputation of the new Viceroy by making satirical use of the format of eulogistic prose and poetical compositions produced for similar events. As was the case with the Duende político de Palacio, it is very likely that the author or authors of the Duende de Mexico had direct access to power enjoying a high position in the court of the Viceroyalty. They no doubt disposed of a team of copyists to disseminate the paper among the ranks of the colonial aristocracy and a more general reading public who may have been attracted by the the popular style of the poems.
