St Petersbourg, Charles Guillaume Muller, 1776-1777.. FIRST FRENCH EDITION 1776-1777, 3 volumes bound together in one, each with separate title page, text in French, translated from the German. PREMIERE COLLECTION: LES NATIONS D'ORIGINE FINNOISE, SECONDE COLLECTION: LES NATIONS TATARES ETABLIES DANS CET EMPIRE, TROISIEME COLLECTION: LES NATIONS SAMOYEDES ET MANDSHOURES, ET LES PEUPLES LES PLUS ORIENTAUX DE LA SIBIRIE. 4to, approximately 260 x 210 mm, 10 x 8 inches, 74 hand coloured costume plates of 75, with Russian, German and French captions, LACKS 1 PLATE (Devin de Kamtchatka, number 68 in Volume 3), pages: [6], 1-108; [4], 1-228; [4], 1-164, bound in modern half calf, brown gilt lettered label to spine, gilt rules between raised bands and date at foot of spine, marbled boards, modern cream endpapers. First title page laid down with repairs to margins and 1 corner, not affecting text, dusty and slightly soiled, 20 plates with small pale stain in the white background, plates 52-55 have top margin slightly trimmed, a few pages age-browned, first three pages have shallow vertical crease, 1 lower margin has tear with loss, not affecting text, a few plates have turning crease to top corners, some margins of plates slightly dusty, 1 plate has small tear with loss to outer margin, nowhere near image, edges of a few plates are untrimmed and ragged, other occasional small marks or light foxing to margins, second title page lightly foxed, text mostly clean, 1 margin has closed tears neatly repaired, not affecting text, otherwise a very good copy. Three volumes only of four, a fourth volume on the Mongols was published in 1780. All the copies listed in Copac are in three volumes and dated 1776-1777 the same as our copies.
