FIRST EDITION FIRST ISSUE 1874, small 8vo,185 x 120 mm, 7¼ x 4¾ inches, original publisher's pictorial blue cloth, gilt illustration and rules to upper cover, gilt lettering to upper cover and spine, all edges gilt, original brown endpapers, small binder's ticket on last paste-down (Burns & Co), 96 pages. Frontispiece (lacking tissue guard), title vignette and 10 illustrations by Arthur Hughes. Possibly inspired by Alice in Wonderland. 3 fantasy stories each about a different little girl. In the first an 8 year old girl whose birthday was spoilt by quarrelling children, goes through a door in a tree to a fantasy world of unhappy children. Head and tail of spine very slightly worn, tiny bump to lower corners, spine slightly darkened, upper cover very bright, small bump to top edge of upper cover next to spine causing small wrinkle in cloth, inner paper hinges partly cracked, binding tight, endpapers faintly foxed.
