(John) A Series of Original Portraits and Caricature Etchings...with Biographical Sketches and Illustrative Anecdotes.
Edinburgh: Hugh Paton, 1837-38 . first edition, 2 Vols. in 4, 4to., 358 fine etched plates (including the extra suite of 29 not always found) ; orig. deluxe binding of reddish tan morocco, gilt, spines evenly mellowed to tan, excellent Occasional spots of foxing and minor offset (plates to text), and with a small tear witihout loss and slight fraying at tail with loss of first letter of caption to The Craft in Danger plate (depicting elephant skeleton), but among the freshest copies we have seen of this delightful work. It portrays Edinburgh's inhabitants and visitors in the later eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries: "a unique time capsule of society which no other city has the good fortune to possess" (as we have seen it described, though can't remember where...). Subjects include Adam Smith, James Hutton, Joseph Black, Vincent Lunardi, William Robertson, William Smellie, Dr. Alexander Monro (secundus), William Cullen, Andrew Duncan, Thomas Jefferson, Admiral Duncan, Lord Hailes, John Wesley, James Bruce, Peter Williamson, Thomas Paine, and a host of other philosophers, scientists, lawyers and law lords, educators, radicals, fishwives, army and navy men, pipers, surgeons, actors and actresses, golfers, churchmen, tradespeople, beggars, freaks, rogues, eccentrics, balloonists, booksellers and balladeers: the great and good rubbing shoulders with the lowliest members of society, a just reflection of Edinburgh before the old town/new town divide. And though best known for the plates, the text provides superb biographical and anecdotal notes, largely put together by James Paterson with the help of such well-informed worthies as Robert Chambers, David Laing, Alexander Smellie and James Maidment.
