1896. London: Macmillan and Co., 1896. 2 pp preliminary ads (paginated 3-4) plus 2 pp terminal ads (paginated [5]-6), with inside front and rear cover ads paginated [2] & 7, the last being dated "20.3.96". Original tan wrappers printed in brown. First Colonial Edition, issued as No. 294 in "Macmillan's Colonial Library," "intended for circulation only in India and the British Colonies." The text is from the same plates as the domestic issue published by Osgood McIlvaine, but on thinner paper; the colonial issue does not include the Hatherell frontispiece that appears in the domestic one.~This colonial edition was bound either in flexible dark blue-green cloth, or (as here) in tan wrappers. The cloth-bound version has an eight-page ad catalogue dated "20.3.96" at the end; this wrappered version has those eight pages divided between front and rear, forming the endpapers (pages 1 and 8 invisible, as they are pasted down onto the inside covers).~This is a very good-plus copy (spine a bit darkened, but otherwise remarkably free of soil or wear); unlike the domestic edition published by Osgood McIlvaine & Co., this colonial one by Macmillan is not at all common. Not mentioned in Purdy but see pp 86-91.
