Aldvs Pivs Manvtivs [Aldus Pius Manutius] with an Essay by Theodore Low de Vinne Together with a Leaf from the Aldine Hypnerotomachia Poliphili Printed at Venice in 1499 [Leaf Book]
San Francisco: the Book Club of California 1924, edition limited to 250 copies. () [32]. Very good. Folio. Quarter black cloth over mottled brown paper boards. Gilt title to spine. Shelfwear to bottom edges of boards and corners. Bookplate of June and Walter Tower to front pastedown. All edges uncut. The original leaf is bound in after page [v-vi] and is in fine antiquarian condition with only light foxing to edges. One of 250 numbered copies printed by the Grabhorn Press, this being # 55. A beautifully-produced letterpress leaf book, complete with an original leaf from the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, one of the finest examples of an illustrated incunable from the renowned and innovative press of Aldus Manutius. In the introduction, de Vinne calls the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili a ..."perfect union of illustrations and text [that] stands almost alone, its artistic success attested by the praise of generations of discerning critics". The leaf included here bears signature mark "o iii" and contains a woodcut of a fanciful fountain or altar. The fine book accompanying the leaf includes a fascinating essay, printed in a type similar to that used by the Aldine Press, with many reproductions of woodcuts. A fantastic production with an original leaf from one of the finest and most enduring incunables. The first leaf book from the Book Club of California (Dispersed and Disbound 22).
