Observatiore de la Baie Raffles (Northern Territory)
Paris,: circa,, 1845.. Tinted lithograph, 180 x 310 mm, mounted and framed. An original hand coloured lithograph from the official account of Voyage de la corvette l'Astrolabe... by Jules SÈbastien Dumont d'Urville, the great Pacific and Antarctic explorer.Dumont d'Urville's instruction from King Louis-Phillippe was to explore the South Pole. Up to this time France had taken no part in Antarctic discovery which had been dominated by the English. Dumont d'Urville left Toulon on 7 September, 1837 with two ships, the Astrolabe and the ZÈlee, on a voyage that was to become dogged by mishap and illness. Dumont d'Urville visited Raffles Bay, Northern Territory in 1839 and a surveying party can be seen making observations on shore, whilst both the expedition's ships are at anchor in the harbour.Raffles Bay was an early attempt by Europeans to settle Australia's northern coast. It is at the eastern end of the Cobourg Peninsula and was named by the explorer Phillip Parker King in 1818 after Sir Thomas Stanford Raffles, founder of the colony of Singapore.
