Philadelphia: A. Small, 1818. Subtitle reads, "A correct Narrative of the Public Transactions of the Embassy, of the Voyage to and from China, and of the Journey from the Mouth of the Pei-Ho to the Return to Canton Interspersed with Observations upon the Face of the Country, the Polity, Moral Character, and Manners, of the Chinese Nation" (whew). Original boards, designed to be bound by the purchaser in leather but not done in this case. Paper spine label is still present, some worn as are the edges. All hinges are tight and inside, some foxing. Pages 382. Protected in a clear, mylar dustjacket. The first American edition, as was common at the time, was less sophisticated than the quarto first London edition of the previous year, which had seven plates and is listed in Abbey Travel 536.. This is a more scarce edition than the English first or second editions. . First U.S. EDITION. Illus. by Folding Map. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
