The Self-Interpreting Bible
London. R. Evans, 1814 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A scarce and lavish folio edition of John Brown's famousSelf Interpreting BibleWith engraved title page, frontispiece, and thirty-eight further engraved plates (collated complete). The Self Interpreting Bible was Brown's most significant work, and it remained in print (edited by others), until well into the twentieth century. The objective of providing a commentary for ordinary people was very successful. The idea that the Bible was self-interpreting involved copious marginal references, especially comparing one scriptural statement with another. Brown also provided a substantial introduction to the Bible, and added an explication and reflections for each chapter. A measure of its popularity is that it was translated into Welsh, and its appearance in Robert Burns's Epistle to James Tennant. With family register of the Wilson Family from Clifton Campville, Stafford to the front endpapers of volume II, and ink signature of 'John Wilson, Dirleton, 1817' to front pasedowns. One volume bound in two (complete). Condition: In tree-calf bindings. Externally, smart with lovely colour, though with some bumping, a few marks and some slight rubbing. Hinges are strained. Internally, generally firmly bound. Ink inscriptions to front pastedown, recto of front free-endpaper, with extensive ink annotations to the endpapers of volume II. Closed tears and slight lossto frontispiece of volume I, and loss to engraved title page. Pages are foxed throughout. Overall:GOOD.
