In 1915, Beatrix took on the financial responsibility for Esher's education and over the ensuing years encouraged and supported her in her studies. Esther became a teacher and in the 1920's was English Mistress at Amberley House in Christchurch, New Zealand, where one of her pupils still remembers her as 'a most excellent teacher'. From Christchurch she moved south to Invercargill and taught for many years at St. John's Girls' School. She retired to Te Anau in the beautiful lake country Southland and when she died there in the early 1980's she left her house to the little Anglican church next door, St. Michael's and all Angels, of which it is said she was 'the practical founder'."
