The Architecture of John Russell Pope, Complete in Three Volumes
New York: William Helburn. 1919-1930. First printing. Hardcover. Very Good +. First edition, 1919-1930. Three elephant folios in original cloth backed portfolios with original string ties holding over 300 loose plates of Pope's architectural legacy as illustrated in photographs, floorplans, and architectural renderings. This copy has been thoroughly collated. CONTENTS: Volume I- lacking plates 18, 63-68; Volume II, Part I & Parts 2 & 3, Part 4- complete. Volume III, Part I-lacking 14, 48; Volume III, Parts 2 &3- lacking 59, 72, 73, 79. Plates are all in original housing, including the paper wrappers issued for the individual sections, a few of which are rubbed at the edges. Volume II part IV has a faint tidemark to the lower left corners which diminishes through the stack, and had been kept seperate from the case the other parts are in. All other plates are in near fine or better condition, with cases also very good with minor shelfwear. included are Pope's designs for Yale, Dartmouth, Johns Hopkins, and many prestigious private residences. A very rare set of the architect whose recieved wide acclaim for later designing the National Archives and Records Administration building (completed in 1935), the Jefferson Memorial (completed in 1943) and the West Building of the National Gallery of Art (completed in 1941), all in Washington, DC.
