1866. Signed by Lee. Within six months of the surrender at Appomattox Courthouse, Gerneral Robert E. Lee assumed the presidency of Washington College in his beloved Virginia. In some ways it was a natural fit for the commander of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, as General Lee brought to the job his experience as superintendant of West Point before the Civil War. He recruited both northern and southern students during his tenure. The recipient of this rather unimpressive report was almost certainly Lewin W. Barringer. Though born in Spain in 1850, Lewin would certainly have considered himself a southerner though he was born in Spain. His father, Daniel Moreau Barringer, served as Zachary Taylor';s minister to Spain from 1849 to 1853, and returned to his native state of North Carolina where Lewin was raised. Lewin';s uncle was Civil War cavalry Brigadier General Rufus Barringer. Report cards signed by Lee at Washington College are scarcer than signed diplomas.
