Aside from minor shelf rubbing to dust jacket book has been well cared for and is in pristine condition. Contents detail the vast wardrobe, which is legendary, of Queen Elizabeth I in her own time some of the richly embroidered gowns were displayed with other treasures to dazzle the eyes of foreign visitors to the Tower of London. This book gives the first full transcript of the inventories of Queen Elizabeth's clothes preserved in the British Library and the Shakespeare Library, Washington, DC. Chapters are devoted to Elizabeth's interest in fashion from abroad, and her appearance as recorded in contemporary accounts, as well as in her portraits. The work is copiously annotated, illustrated with 460 black and white photographs of portraits, miniatures, tomb sculptures, engravings, woven textiles and embroiderers. Two indexes are provided, the first for paintings, persons, places and events, while the second, partly a glossary, enables the reader to trace quickly information on fashionable dress and accessories.
