The ship's steward's handbook. A complete guide to the victualling and catering departments on board ship
Glasgow: James Munro & Co., n.d., 1918. First edition, 8vo, pp. viii, 436, [2]; illustrated throughout; original blue cloth stamped in gilt on the upper cover and spine; near fine copy. Inscribed in an attractive hand by G. A. Britton, an early owner and employee of the Leyland Line as a 2nd Steward on the S. S. Cornishman, and dated 19 May, 1922; Britton also lists his other appointments as chief steward on six other named ships. A most interesting book from the days when big liners and steamships were at the height of their glory. The text discusses everything from provisioning, sanitation, and cooking, to mixology and the social pecking order of stewards in a variety of positions, as well as stewards' wages and the calculations thereof.
