Latin and English Poems
London 1738 - A scarce first edition of Loveling's poems about his experiences of the brothels and public houses of London. First Edition. With the pictorial bookplate of Henry Jackson, 'lineal descendent of John de Norfolk',to the front pastedown. Benjamin Loveling (b. 1711) was a Britishpoet. He was educated at Winchester College (17221727) and at Trinity College, Oxford, where he matriculated as a commoner on 13 July 1728; he left without taking a degree. After this little is known about his life. Nichols claims Loveling was ordained deacon, lived gaily and died young (p. 30), while Dr Johnson possibly had Loveling in mind when describing a wit about town, who wrote Latin bawdy verse (J. Boswell, Life, 16 Oct 1769). Clues to Loveling's later life must be gleaned from his collection of Latin and English verse, Poems by a Gentleman of Trinity College, Oxford (1738 and 1741), which hints at an uproarious existence in London. His chief occupations appear to have been boozing and whoring, and his poetry catalogues in salacious detail the pleasures available in Drury Lane brothels. However, it seems Loveling was forced to leave London for a lengthy exile in the country, perhaps in Northamptonshire. His reasons for fleeing the city are unclear; if he was not avoiding imprisonment for debt, he might have been trying to escape his wearing lifestyle. DNB. Condition: In a full calf binding. Externally, rubbed. Some marks to the boards. Boards detached but present. Internally, textblock generally firmly bound althoughfirst blankpartially detached from titlepage.
