Octavo, original publisher's green cloth (rubbed and stained), remnants of original paper label to spine; front pastedown with early binder's ticket of William Moffitt, King Street, Sydney; folding frontispiece map of Sydney Town dated 1831; pp. vi, [iv]; 7 - 204, colour folding plate of signal flags mostly missing, [86], occasional foxing and staining, a worn copy of a rare almanac. The rare first year of issue of The New South Wales Calendar and General Post Office Directory, a publication that ceased in 1837. The fascinating textual content is a valuable primary source for the period, and includes a detailed list of civil servants and colonial administrators, terms of advertisements for colonial newspapers (The Sydney Gazette; The Australian; The Sydney Herald); a list of vessels which use the harbour, mail and stage coach fares, a list of towns and stations, an itinerary of roads throughout New South Wales, land regulations, rules for obtaining convict servants, arrangements for mail dispatch, the establishment of King's School and the Australian College, flag signals, a description of the solar eclipse of 1832, phases of the moon and an extensive post office directory.
