Shahwandahgooze Days
Toronto: Privately published (Warwick Bros. & Rutter), 1925. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 175 copies printed of which this is no. 159. 76 p. 24 cm. Frontispiece portrait of Dunlap, title page vignette and 21 other illustrations, including 11 vignettes. Black leather covers with gold impressing. Top edge gilt. Slight wear to edges. Shahwandahgooze Lake (now Lac Marin) is the setting for this book of humorous verse. Author David A. Dunlap (1863-1924) was a lawyer in Mattawa who invested in a silver mine and became a millionaire. He later became one of the figures behind the Shahwandahgooze social club, a property with a 9-hole golf course and huge log lodge (see p. 16). This book explains the origin of the name in Algonquin, gives the rules for the golf club, and describes several local characters. Sip-Him-Dew-Dave wrote only this book, now quite rare. Illustrations by a young Thoreau MacDonald. Edison B2.
