North South America Pacific Islands Dangerous Archipelago 1817 Thomson old map
1817 - America (North America / South America / Pacific Islands / "Dangerous Archipelago" / etc.) Issued London, 1817 by Thomson. Engraved by J. & G. Menzies. [1813*]. Beautiful oversized folio sheet early 19th century antique map. Engraved map with superior original full hand color highlighted in outline. North American interior west of the Mississippi only labelled Louisiana (Territory) and New Albion, no hint of interior terrain west of the Stony Mountains (Rockies). Columbia River from Washington Puget Sound area connects with dotted lines clearly intended to represent the mythical Mer de l'Ouest (River of the West) that supposedly connected from the east to allow for a through nautical passage. In VG or better condition, minor light surface age wear and toning as typical, overall map remains clean, well preserved and very attractive. Nice bright example, with touch of original colorist red error rarely encountered on maps of this era in this manner. If it were an 1817 coin with a similar unique slight production error, it would be of potential interest to quite a number of people aware of such things. Original fold line as issued. Sheet measures c. 28 1/2" x 21". Engraved area measures c. 20" x 19". Tall folio sheet, strong impression from the plate. Atlas position number affixed t. r. as issued. [R11038]. Phillips, Atlases in Library of Congress, 781, 52 (*giving date as 1813). Tooley's Dictionary of Mapmakers, v. 4, p. 271
