First Edition in English 2 vols, 4to,xlii, 402 + (iv), 398, (18) pp, folding map by J. Senex and 152 plates and maps, some foxing to plates as usual, cont. panelled calf, corners a little worn, expertly re-backed, morocco labels. A translation by John Ozell (d.1743) of Relation d'un Voyage du Levant first published in Paris the previous year. Tournefort, one of the greatest botanists of his generation and "Royal Botanist" to Louis XIV, was sent at the suggestion of M. le comte de Pontchartrain on a 2 year journey to gather information, not only on botany but other forms of natural history, as well as on the geography, commerce and social habits of the nations through which he passed. The journey was undertaken in the years 1700 to 1702 and he was accompanied by the German botanist, Andreas Gundesheimer and the artist, Claude Aubriet. Tournefort did not live to see the work published; he was the victim of a traffic accident in Paris. ESTC T133108Hunt 445 Cox I. p.221
