"This journal is one of the most notable of American travel accounts of the Revolutionary period not only because of Chastellux's keen observation and directness of his narrative but also because of his acute comments on society and the character of the people in different walks of life," (Clark I, 212). Chastellux served in the American Revolution as a Major General in the French expeditionary forces of the Comte de Rochambeau. Chastellux acted as the principal liaison officer between the French commander in chief and George Washington. After the war he recounted his experiences of the American Revolution, an account of his friend George Washington, and his travel in America (Virginia, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire) immediately after the war in this book. George Washington library at Mount Vernon had a copy of Chastellux's book (which sold at Christies for $1 million in 2013. (1st ed. printed in 1785, though a smaller version was printed in 1781, 1st English ed. was in 1787.)
