Title printed in red & black. 6 p.l., CCXXXVII, [25] leaves. Small folio, 18th-cent. half-vellum & speckled boards (first few leaves a bit soiled, some inoffensive worming at beginning & end). Nuremberg: D. Gerlach, 1571. Third edition, corrected and enlarged (earlier eds.: 1562 and 1564). Mathesius (1504-65), a close friend of Agricola and Luther, was the first pastor at Joachimsthal, the richest silver mine in Central Europe, located in the heart of the Bohemian mining district known as the Erzegebirge. The present treatise, delivered in the form of sermons, describes the processes of mining iron, copper, silver, gold, and other metals. Mathesius's "sermons on mining topics were extremely popular for he spoke in a 'bergkleuftigen' manner, in the familiar miner's tongue. Mining writer Wolfgang Paul said that these sermons related practical mining problems to Biblical stories 'in order to influence the miners' religious sentiment and the pleasure in the church as well as to deepen their professional interest'."-Hoover, p. 134. The final [25] leaves contain an invaluable historical "chronicle" of Joachimsthal. "Sarepta" at the beginning of the title refers to the ancient Phoencian mining town at the foot of the Lebanon mountains. A very nice and fresh copy. ❧ Ferchl, p. 345-"mit viel berg- und hüttentech." Hoover 565-(1st ed. of 1562). Koch, Geschichte und Entwicklung des bergmännischen Schrifttums, pp. 43-44. .
