Le Memoires de Mess. Martin du Bellay Seigneur de Langey Contenans le discours de plusieurs choses advenues au Royaume de Frace, depuis l'an M. D. XII. jusqu'au trespas du Roy Francois premier
A la Rochelle par Pierre Davantes, 1573 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An uncommon and early copy of this significant military autobiography, holding Du Bellay's memoirs of the Great Italian Wars. Written in French. Martin Du Bellay was the third son of Louis and Marguerite du Bellay de la Tour-Landry. He was a skilled negotiator, a great captain and a patron of literature. These curious memories extend the descriptions of battles and sieges in which the author was found, with thesecond part focusing on Du Bellay's brother; Guillaume du Bellay, seigneur de Langey, who was a French diplomat and general under King Francis I. Originally published the year of the author's death. Adorned with beautifully engraved head and tail pieces, as well as decorative engraved capitals, and a small vignette to the title page. Condition: Rebound in an early calf binding with gilt detailing to the spine. Externally, generally smart, with only some light rubbing and very small instance of damp staining to the tail of the spine. Internally, firmly bound and surprisingly bright, with only some small instances of light foxing. Small scattered annotated notes in copperplate ink, as well as a neat copperplate ink signature to the recto of the front free endpaper. Evidence of past worming to the last few leaves. Overall: VERY GOOD.
