A superb—Fine—copy, bright, tight and probably unread; in a just about Fine jacket, very lightly rubbed to toe of spine panel, slightly darkened at head. Slocum & Cahoon A21. Connolly, Modern Movement 42. & Set from the text of a copy of the unauthorized first American edition (Paris: Shakespeare and Company, 1927), incorporating most of its typographical errors and adding several new ones. "Ulysses is not a great novel in the sense of A la recherch√© du temps perdu. The characters do not develop. It has no consistent tragic grandeur and bogs down in several stylistic exercises which have nothing to do with the novel proper; yet the early Deadelus section, the middle parts of Bloom and the Nightown orgy and Molly's final reverie stand out like Gaudi's unfinished cathedral. The whole plan fails through Joyce's intellectual preference for language rather than people—yet somehow it does achieve greatness like a ruined temple soaring from a jungle . . ." (Connolly) Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.
