Very rare first Edition. Elson, William H., & William S. Gray. ELSON-GRAY BASIC READER. PRE-PRIMER [Dick and Jane]. The Philippine Islands: Scott, Foresman, and Company, 1930. "Dick. See Dick. See Dick Run" Sm. 8vo, 40pp. 39 in-text color illustrations. True First Edition. Publisher's black cloth-backed printed wrappers printed in black, green & orange. A very fine example showing very little use, not a public school issue. Cover is clean and bright with bumps to corners. Front cover is creased at cloth-back. Children?s names in blue crayon on inside back cover (Beverly Stine and Doreen South). Very little foxing and some slight stains to bottom edges of a few pages. Pages and text is clean and free of marks. Illustrations are clear and bright. A VERY fine copy of a rare classic children?s book. In this first printing, SALLY was still called BABY [unnamed to this point] & SPOT the dog was still a TERRIER. In later editions he became a COCKER SPANIEL. PUFF the cat was still called, LITTLE MEW, as of this first printing [she was PUFF in later editions]. The very first of the famous Elson-Gray Basic Readers, introducing Dick, Jane, & Baby followed by nine short stories, using a 68-word vocabulary - the birth of the original Dick & Jane series. As the copyright explains, the booklet contains material first used in The Elson Pupil's Hand Chart, originally copyrighted in 1921. Rarely encountered. More information on request.
