PARIS; during the interesting month of JULY, 1815. A series of letters, addressed to a friend in London
London, Gale and Fenner, 1815.. FIRST EDITION, SIR WALTER SCOTT'S COPY WITH HIS SIGNATURE AND BOOKPLATE, 8vo, 220 x 130 mm, 8.5" x 5", hand coloured frontispiece, black and white engraved vignette of Napoleon on title page, 2 hand coloured plates of members of the Imperial Guard, pages x, 165, (1 - advert), bound in contemporary half calf over patterned clofth sides, blind stamped decoration on covers, expertly rebacked with original backstrip laid on, gilt motifs in compartments, original gilt lettered morocco label. New leather just showing slightly on hinges, few slight marks to cloth, small faded strip at top of lower cover, corners slightly worn, inner paper hinges neatly repaired, 2 blank leaves before frontispiece slightly foxed, slight offsetting from colour plates onto facing pages, occasional pale fox spot, contents otherwise bright and clean. Binding tight and firm. A very good copy of a rare Napoleonic item. This copy is special as it belonged to Sir Walter Scott the famous novelist. He has pasted his bookplate to the front pastedown and he has signed the book at the top of the title page. The book was more recently in the library of Eric Quayle, noted collector and bibliographer and he has verified that the bookplate is indeed that of Scott and has signed a statement of that fact with his initials. The author recounts in some detail his stay in Paris after the Battle of Waterloo when all the allied troops were arriving in the capital. He makes a large number of visits to monuments, galeries, theatres and sites of touristic interest, while at the same time taking a deep interest in the actions of the allies. Napoleon and Wellington are mentioned in passing. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING.
