Soldiers' Pay
London: Chatto & Windus,, 1930. With a preface by Richard Hughes. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine gilt, top edge stained green. With the dust jacket. A superb copy in the very lightly tanned dust jacket with some tiny loss at one corner and a few trivial marks. First UK edition, first impression of Faulkner's first published novel. The American edition was issued in 1926 and is a famously difficult and expensive book to obtain in the dust jacket. The present London edition is the first to print the important preface by Richard Hughes, author of A High Wind in Jamaica (1929; published in the USA as The Innocent Voyage), which did much in itself to introduce this great Southern author to the English public. Not at all common in this condition.
