Desultory Notes on the Government and People of China, and on the Chinese Language, Illustrated with a Sketch of the province of Kwang-Tung
London.: Allen.. 1847.. 2 folding charts, 4 coloured lithographs, (1 duplicated), folding coloured map 'A Sketch of the Province of Kwang-Tung....', xvi + 250pp, neat stamp of G.D. Musso, an Italian resident of inter-war Shanghai title page, signed J.C. Hall on browned half title. Both folding charts torn along horizontal fold with a little subsequent loss, upper hinge cracked, one chart has been incorrectly folded causing the fold to protrude a little from the binding. Professionally rebound in modern cloth with new endpapers. Lust 124. This interesting work on the province known today as Guangdong is full of detail of daily life and ancedote which, coming as it does, from the pen of the British consulate's interpreter is not surprising. Thomas Taylor Meadows was involved in the many and various exchanges with the Chinese that the Consulate was involved with. As well as the exposure his work gave him to China and the Chinese people, he was in any case interested enough to spend much of his spare time among Chinese people "who before have had no intercourse with Europeans, with the object, which I have constantly kept in view, of making myself acquainted with the institutions and government of the country, and with the character of the people; of discovering the reasons for so many of their actions that appear very odd until these reasons are known...." In the 19 chapters, or notes as the author terms them, of this work such subjects as the Chinese language (6 chapters), mandarins, including information on their duties and salaries, internal stability of the Chinese Empire, how to deal with Chinese and how they view foreigners and foreign countries and opium are discussed. .
