Published 1855-1856. Includes 14 plates, most tinted or in color, and 4 maps/plans (3 fold-out). All three volumes are uniformly bound in marbled boards with green leather on the corners and sides. Raised bands and gilt lettering on the backstrips.Covers worn, with chipping and peeling along edges. Most of the panels are detached (but all are present). Some attempts to repair binding visible on Vol. I. Pages show some occasional notation and marginalia throughout. Frontispiece of Vol.?I is loose. Ads removed from the end of Vol. I. Also contains 4 tipped-in hand-drawn maps, inserted by a previous owner. They appear to be tracings or recreations of maps by Johann Burckhardt, swiss explorer and orientalist, of his travels in the same Middle Eastern area, from the first part of the 19th century.
