Wilkinson's General Atlas of the World. Quarters, Empires, Kingdoms, States etc. with Appropriate Tables. New Edition; but the First Edition with additional maps of Mexico, Brazil etc
London: Hamilton, Adams, & Co. 1827. Engraved title and 53 engraved maps with contemporary full hand-colouring; the two World maps double-page, the remainder single. 4to (32.5 x 27 cm), contemporary half calf, marbled boards; boards detached, lacking backstrip, stitching broken at one gutter; internally very bright and clean apart from faults as listed below. This atlas contains 5 maps not present in earlier editions, including Mexico (in which Texas is shown in the region of San Luis Potosi, New Santander, and Coahuila); Brazil; Columbia; & Peru, Chile, & Buenos Ayres; these with Hamilton Adams imprint and dated 1827. The other maps with Wilkinson's imprint and variously dated between 1809 & 1821 and include "the United States of America Confirmed by Treaty 1783", this map dated 1812 in the imprint, with a table below the title listing 20 states, including Franklinia. The Editor, in his preamble, states that geography "Always, therefore, had it made a part of polite education......more particularly interesting, not only from the great events that have recently taken place, and the important scenes that are at present exhibiting in different parts of the world, but also from the numerous voyages of discovery that have been undertaken, and the great increase of geographical knowledge that has been thereby obtained. An so great and various have been these improvements, that those Maps which, a few years back, were deservedly esteemed, and now found to be, in many instances, very deficient and erroneous. These considerations induced the Editor to offer to the public attention, as he flattered himself it would be found to contain more information (particularly with respect to those countries that have been recently explored) than any set of Maps heretofore published". Overall the maps attractive, clean, and with good margins. A rare edition of this atlas. Faults: the double-page map of the World "from the Discoveries & Observations made in the Latest Voyages & Travels" (dated 1825) has a split on central fold; the map of England and Wales has a small ink annotation and tear into margin (not into image); the map of Scotland has a brown stain on verso; the map of Ireland has a brown stain upper right just into image; the map of the Russian Empire in Europe & Asia slightly cropped by binder on right margin just affecting text beyond the image; the map of Bavaria has one margin strengthened on the reverse; the map of France divided into Departments has a short tear into the image; the map of Switzerland has a small ink annotation under the imprint; the map of Asia, the fore-margin is reinforced on verso, edge chipped with short tears but not into image; the map of North America has a light blue smudge in Davis's Strait; & the map of South America has a brown mark approx. 1/4 x 3/4 inch within the image & on margin.
