Istoriia Partii Kommunistov v Rossii i V I Lenin (rech') [The History of the Communist Party in Russia and V I Lenin (a speech)]
Moscow: Otdel Pechati Moskovskogo Soveta R. i K. D., 1919. Octavo (24.8 × 16.8 cm). Original printed wrappers; 54, [2] pp. Wrappers lightly toned; else a very good, uncut and unopened copy. First edition of the text of a speech about Vladimir Lenin and his role in the development of the Russian Communist Party, held by Lev Kamenev in Moscow in 1919. For Kamenev, the development of the revolutionary movement is inextricably fused with Lenin's persona, and he is effusive in his praise, calling the leader "the annihilating sword of the proletariate" and the "friend of all workers." In his preface Kamenev notes that "the person to whom most attention is given in this book will frown the most when reading the passages about him ... but the worker deserves to learn about Lenin." An important text, one of the first biographical sources on the revolutionary leader, as well as a key moment in the development of the cult of Lenin. As Stalin had Kamenev executed in 1936 following a show trial, the book would have been subject to confiscation and destruction. Not unsurprisingly, we are thus unable to trace a single copy at past Russian auctions or in the trade. KVK and OCLC only appear to show the copy at the French National Library.
