The Newcomes: Memoirs of a Most Respectable Family.
Bradbury & Evans., Whitefriars, London. 1854 - 1st edition. 2 volume set. viii + 380 pages + 23 steel engraved plates and an engraved title and printed title page to volume 1 with printed title dated 185 AND volume 2 dated 1855 consisting of viii + 375 pages + 23 plates and an engraved title and printed title in. Both volumes also have many woodcut vignettes and head pieces. Condition: There is a thin/fine brown mark to the gutters of the engraved plates in volume 2 which seems to have been from binding from the parts and the removal of the paper covers. Several plates have a light atmospheric stain with one plate affected slightly, affecting the odd plate only and edges, a light offsetting at title pages, volume one the edges of part of the book are slightly age toned, marbled page edges and marbled endpapers all matching. Some rubbing to edges of the leather and corners. A clean tight set, no inscriptions. The etched plates are delightful and done by Arthur Conan Doyle's grandfather Richard Doyle. Octavo. 1854-55.
