Much of the work is devoted to an attempt to combat the perceived atheism of Spinoza’s philosophy. Paul Janet suggests that Bayle’s Dictionary was Fenelon and other French critics’ principle source of information on Spinoza’s work, and that the loss of Spinoza’s subtleties in the reduction was the root of much of the criticism. (Janet, Paul. French Thought and Spinozism, The Contemporary Review, Volume 29. 1078 p.)
