London: Printed by J. Bettenham for B. Creake, 1723 - FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. Folio, pp.[8], vi, xxiv, [10], 563, [3], 12. With a frontispiece copper engraving of King Brian Boru, a folding map of Ireland, a folding map of 'The Travels of the Scythians till they arrived in Ireland', 28 plates showing important family pedigrees, and 12 plates showing coats of arms. In contemporary brown full calf, recently re-backed with original leather and title label pasted over spine. Raised bands and gilt titles / decoration to spine. All edges flecked red. Heavy external wear, skilfully repaired to a pleasing robust condition. Very good overall. Completed c.1634 in Early Modern Irish, this is both the first edition in English and the first printed edition of Keating's important work on Irish history up to the conquest of Henry II, which remained highly influential throughout the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
