FIRST EDITION of the the magnificent "Duncan Caesar", the most beautiful and celebrated edition of Caesar's Commentaries in English, complete with 86 superb large folio engravings (on 85 plates) of maps, plans, battles, and scenes depicting various soldiers and customs of the world. With the rare oversized bull and elephant engravings. The engravings include 78 plates (55 of which are large double-page folding plates), 6 double-page maps, and an engraved portrait frontispiece of Caesar. London: Tonson, Draper, and Dodsley, 1753. Folio, full contemporary calf with elaborately gilt-decorated spine, marbled endpapers. A few small repairs to binding; bull plate and additional plate with repaired closed tears; elephant plate with closed tear at fold, small paper flaw in margin of O2. Text exceptionally clean. A stunning, wide-margined copy. RARE, particularly complete and in such fine condition in a contemporary binding.
