Faber and Faber. London. 1954 First edition. DW. SIGNED Presentation copy from the author to Angharad Ryder. Written under the text of the half-title "for Angharad Ryder from William Golding with best wishes." Also loosely inserted is a hand written envelope from Golding with a hand written postcard inside, "Dear Miss Rhyder, Yes "Lord of the Flies" is the alleged translation of Beelzebub. I will sign your Nobel Speech if you send it. Yours sincerely William Golding." Also included are two hand written letters from Golding to Rhyder. "....This is all a bit much! If 'Lord of the Flies' is valuable, I don't want to be responsible for it. I will sign another slip (enclosed). If however you are set on getting the book signed, perhaps Faber & Faber will hold the copy until I can sign it there. I shall be in London for a few days in September. I'm sorry to be so unaccommodating and so bad at spelling! Yours William Golding." and "....Yes you missed my September visit. However as luck would have it providence is on your side and I shall be in London for some of the second week in November. If you w'ld kindly use registered post, send it to me at Faber & Faber to be collected, I will sign it and send it back. Yours sincerely, William Golding." E/ps and outer edges are sl. spotted. Spine is sl. knocked, bds. are sl. faded at extremities. Wrapper is sl. dulled with slight marks to top right corner, sl. foxed and has sl. wear to head of spine. Overall VG+. A rare opportunity to obtain a signed copy of this book with the extra letters and card.
