FIRST EDITION 1588, Latin text, folio in fours, 310 x 195 mm, 12¼ x 7¾ inches, woodcut vignette to title page, numerous diagrams in the text, historiated initials, text and illustrations within ruled borders, pages [4], 202, [1] - colophon (1587) and errata, bound in full antique mottled calf, narrow gilt border to covers, raised bands, gilt rules and early gilt lettered morocco label to spine, marbled endpapers. Spine slightly rubbed, corners slightly worn, ink name and shelf mark on front endpaper, ink shelf mark crossed through in upper margin of title page, very pale browning to 1 page, vertical split to 1 inner margin along line of border, neatly repaired, no loss of text and hardly noticeable, small pale brown stain to final page, otherwise contents very clean and bright, binding tight and firm. A very good copy of a scarce book. Guidobaldo del Monte (1545-1607) was an Italian mathematician, military engineer and astronomer, author of several books on these subjects. This is his study of the centres of gravity based on Archimedian principles. He was Galileo's patron and friend for 20 years and possibly his greatest influence on mechanics. They reportedly conducted experiments in projectile trajectories together. Monte also helped develop mathematical instruments, including the proportional and elliptical compass. Listed in henry Sotheran, Bibliotheca Chemico-Mathematica, 12033 and Sotheby's,The Library of the Earls of Macclesfield, Science, Volume Five 1436. Not in Harvard, Italian 16th Century Books.
