Report of the Superintendent of the Coast Survey, Showing Progress of the Survey During the Year 1855
Washington, D.C.: Cornelius Wendell, Printer, 1856. First edition [1856]. Worn. Published as Ex. Doc. 6, 34th Congress, 1st Session, House of Representatives. Bookplate with compliments of Prof. A. D. Bache, Supt. U.S. Coast Survey, on front pastedown, along with another name in pencil. Thick volume containing text, appendices, with numerous folding maps and diagrams. All maps present, diagrams 52 and 53 (Boutelle's scaffolding & apparatus) absent. Brown blind stamped cloth with gilt lettering, nearly 12" tall, about 2.5" thick. Maps comprise a survey of the US from Northern New England down the coasts of Florida, the Gulf to Galveston, and the west coast from San Diego to the Pacific Northwest. Some maps very large in size, mainly in very good condition with just a few pinhole tears to intersecting folds, short closed tears to two maps where they connect with the book, extra creases to a few, very minor old dampstaining to the edges of a few maps, one diagram stained toward the inner margin from old leaves, map 56 bound in upside down. Covers rubbed and have a persistent dustiness, short surface tear along front joint, binding sound, front free endpaper removed, intermittent dampstains to the outer margins of the text pages throughout, chip to bottom of map list with minor loss of text to the last two lines.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fair. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
