High Windows
London Faber and Faber,, 1974. Octavo. Original blue-grey cloth, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Very slight fading at the tips, with a few small and trivial marks to leaves. A lovely copy in excellent condition, in the lightly rubbed and faintly toned jacket. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy inscribed with characteristically guarded warmth by Larkin on the first blank, "For Peter / In memory of a splendid lunch & semi-splendid recording - Philip". Peter Orr was the editor in charge of the recording project that produced "Philip Larkin; High Windows: poems read by the author", (1975; Argo record label). The tempered enthusiasm of Larkin's "semi-splendid" must be ascribed to the fact that the poet famously disliked the sound of his own voice, rather than any bad blood between them; indeed Larkin had worked with Orr before, in an interview published by Argo in 1967, as number 8 in the British Council's series "The Poet Speaks", for which Orr also interviewed many of Britain's leading contemporary poets.
